- Tell Us A little About Yourself
Interested in Non Duality, Various aspects of Buddhism, Advaita Vedanta, Jnâna yoga. Have been traveling this path since a teenager. My mother introduced me to meditation at 11 or 12 y/o. She herself was interested in all aspects of Eastern philosophy. I recall her studying various Egyptian and Rosicrucian teachings, Theosophy, various philosophers including Jung and Gurdjieff. She stayed at The Monroe Institute (Out of body and hemisync stuff) and taught some there. I even remember the time she drove the two of us 300 miles to a Scientology session (short lived). She read all the Carlos Castaneda books which I have only recently started on with The Active Side of Infinity. She was quite the explorer.
Now 55 y/o and have renewed my interest over past 3-4 years. Have sat with a couple of Tibetan Buddhist groups, attended Vipassana retreat, read literally a couple hundred books ranging from Tibetan Buddhism, Zen, Vipassana, Hinduism, to Non-duality. My daughter requested an iPod a few years ago and within a week I latched onto it and started downloading and listening to podcasts. The second week she had to ask for it back so I bought one for myself and have literally listened to thousands of podcasts and e-books on spiritually. From James Allen e-books to Zencast, Urban Guru Cafe, Out of Our Minds, Mooji, Muddy Water Zen, Bad Buddhist Radio, Dhamma Talks of Thanissaro Bhikkhu, Buddha at the Gas Pump, and of course, Never Not Here.
When I first encountered Non-Duality it resonated with me. I realized my key was just stopping with my cerebral "forcing" of knowledge into my mind to find happiness. Now, the undoing of how I hitherto managed my mind is unburdening me and filling the void is the happiness I have been seeking. I was listening to a podcast a few weeks ago (I think it was Buddhist Geeks). They were interviewing Lama Surya Das, whose books I have enjoyed, and they asked a question about obtaining enlightenment and he replied to their question with a question, "Well ,how long does it take to reach enlightenment?" Podcast silence. Like a reflex I snapped my fingers and belly laughed. Ah ha!
I guess this is enough. I finally broke down and ordered I Am That by Nisargadatta Maharaj today when I finally found a copy with shipping under $25. I also recently proofed the translation of The Silence of the Mind for the translator. (it's a free download and I recommend it to you.) I friended you on Facebook a few days ago and am now seeding the archives to NNH. Sorry for the run on text but, well, you did ask for some sharing... Larry
