on the risk that this topic will be seen as a "Pariah" (or risky place to post) let's be clear on how very very simple this must be.
A person says, "No one feels happy or gives me a smile after meeting me". It is suggested that, first you start smiling at people, then they may start smiling back at you. After some days he finds that everyone is giving him a smile. You want people to say hello, then start saying hello to them, and see what happens?
What could be more obvious? No concepts are needed. No thought comes up.
If you want to make money, you have to make money for someone else. It's called a job. What's so mysterious about that?
The woodcutter says to the fire, "First give me heat, then I will give you wood."
Is this cause and effect? Is this process? Are you going to reason, "well no one is really there so who is there to say hello, and who is there to smile back?" You will definitely be the one with whom "no one feels happy around".
No Peter, I'm not really saying nobody exists to say hi to. That was where I was joking. We all absolutely know that a smile causes a smile, (a seeming process). I used the most innocuous example that I could think of.
Who would deny that, or act as if it doesn't exist?
Yet duality, non-duality are distinctions that don't exist. (I was going to say probably, but I got brave.) How about this:
Duality is everything (and all) that we can "know". Non-duality can't be known but is that which allows us to "know"? ("know" may be very superficial in these definitions.)
'Duality is everything (and all) that we can "know". Non-duality can't be known but is that which allows us to "know"? ("know" may be very superficial in these definitions.)'
Well yeah that makes sense. btw i'm still kindof getting used to how this forum works. it's an interesting exercise in non-linear thinking.. lol
Since everything is ultimately 'the one', i think that nothing can be known as it is.. at least not by the human mind. If we knew something as it is, we'd find 'the one'.. and that's actually what some spiritual branches are trying to accomplish by staring at stuff all day long, hoping that one day they would see the true essence of it, and in doing so snap out of duality.
To me it's all still a big mystery though... this whole non-duality thing. I mean.. i can mentally understand some of the concepts about it, but somehow most of the time the subjective reality seems very real indeed. Sometimes in meditation i can kind of sense that oneness though, when the boundaries of my being start to blurr a bit more.
I wonder what it's gonna take to fully be that which I Am though.. lol even that sentence sounds silly.. like an elephant wondering what it takes to be an elephant. I guess there's no way of finding that which is nondual through means which are dualistic by nature. So maybe it has to be the other way around.. the One waking up from duality... hmm.. does that make any sense?
Unless that other person recognizes the oneness as well.. but of course on a slightly more superficial level it's nice to exchange those kinds of things.
It's fun to realize that exchanging something as simple as a smile to someone, to recognize their presence in that way, can really make someones day.. and it makes you feel good too! I've experimented with that a little bit a few times.
I used to travel by train between Amsterdam and Delft (2 cities about 40 miles apart) every day for work, so i got to 'meet' a lot of people.. and usually when people go to work they're kindof grumpy, absent minded, thinking about whatever it is that occupies the mind (probably work, family stuff, who knows, anything but here and now). The seats in our trains are arranged in a way where you get to face someone who is in front of ytou, and normally when someone sits down next to you or in front of you, they just sit down and mind their business.
So i decided a few times to try to break the norm, and start saying 'Hi', or to simply smile a little at someone joining your seat.. and it's really fun to see how that breaks the spell, how often people lighten up a bit, even start a little chat.. such a different way to start the day!
Anyway i don't know if this is what you wanted to discuss. I get your point that there's really noone to say hi to, or to smile to, since it's all one.. but we're also dealing with the relative level, and as long as we're experiencing that level, we might as well make it an enjoyable experience :)
