The last time emails went wild

Email notification is an automatic function that lately has been set at 2 weeks.  The details in that email are set in your user area, OR TURNED ON AND OFF.   It is not that I send out to an email list that may have duplicate addresses.  The last time this occured we were working on modifications to the site and had installed several backups to another server to experiment with.  Well, those backups each started emailing notices.

This time I don't think that is happening?  My Assistant and Web Master just moved to a small town and now has a painfully slow internet connection.  I turned the whole system off for now, and if emails still come in 2 weeks, it must be some of those backups?
