A Criticism of Western style Non-dualism
...ca. 2400 years ago Aristotle makes the distinction of 'Prote Philosophia', as the inquiry into the FIRST versus the inquiry into relative nature and issues that are subject to our perceptions an the concrete mind. 'Prote Philosophia' becomes later known as Metaphysics in contrast to Physics.
In the course of Western History, thanks to Francis Bacon, Locke and Hume, 'Physics' took off as STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) in 'materialism', whereas Prote Philosophia ended up in the desperate proposition of Existentialism and Nihilism.
No wonder we tend to resort to Hindu tradition as the proper exposition of non-duality. There is unfortunately a cultural HUBRIS in that which leads to a sort of mix and match grasshopper spirituality for the desperate ones, or a sort of spiritual tourism or spa situation, where everyone can be a "guru" of "being" and "oneness" in the Western Tradition of individualism and entrepreneurship. It is obvious that anyone can claim BEING, the ONE or the ABSOLUTE, and start tweeding about it on Twitter. It's easy, because it is beyond words, and 'everything else' can just be lumped into it and becomes an 'Alice in Wonderland' of realities:
"Just BE, and if you don't get it, it is your own doing. You are digging your own rabbit hole obviously, just BE. It IS NOW, and the best thing is, I absolve you from the painful task and accountability of thinking. Thinking is the scourge of humanity, the devil acting against non-duality. You are lucky that you never learned how to think. You want to stop it right NOW. It is better for you. The ABSOLUTE and BEING don't tolerate thinking, you know"
Sounds a little like the Catholic Church in the Dark Ages? God IS Absolute BEING, no? The CREATOR, not created, no? You live in sin, my friend, no? The sin of relativity, the secondary, impure world of the created creatures. You need redemption, my friend, no? The redeemer sits at the right hand of the Absolute, the Father, no? Take his hand, and come out of the valley of death and relativity, no?
How is non-dualism essentially different from that? To be non-anthropomorphic is just cosmetics. We still divide the world into an ABSOLUTE and a "relative", into a NOW and a "later", and thinking is the devil chasing its own tail.
The insight I take from this is that non-duality can not be asserted positively, because that very moment it becomes a duality, not just any duality, but a duality involving the ABSOLUTE as an orientation, an evaluation, and a judgment.
Welcome to integrality. Integral Discrimination makes work of the Creative Tension between isness and thinking and can interpret relativity integrally in self transcendence and world transformation.
We maybe have to realize that what IS in an ABSOLUTE sense always contains its own movement and change integrally? The 'Area of Principle'.
I see that only now is and that it is beyond the mind. Yet there is a knowing or wisdom which is also beyond the mind.
I'd like to comment on wisdompoint but frankly, I have no idea what he's talking about he seems like a very knowledgeable, intelligent man..... I guess it's my loss.
Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one!
Thanks for confirming my challenge! It is sooo easy, isn't it? If you only have a hammer everything starts to look like a nail, doesn't it?
Is thinking the scourge of humanity? I don't think so.. it's a really handy tool we can use for all sorts of stuff.
However, when we start 'thinking' that we are our thoughts, that's when we mistake our identity.
I understand your criticisms about blackballing 'the ego' though. Maybe it's in part a result of our religious heritage, in which we have God, who is good, and the devil, who is bad.. and in some sense 'spirituality' or 'non-duality' can be just a modern adoptation of these ideas.
The thing is: we do get lost in our made up identity, and we stay in the 'dream' untill we wake up to 'reality'.. so it's really easy to apply the old (religious) paradigms, and before you know it this 'ego' and 'thinking' (i think ego is attachment/identification with (constellations of) thoughts) has been labeled as something unwanted, something bad, something that we must get rid of, before we can be 'enlightened'.
Well, in my current experience, i don't think thinking is a problem.. It's just there, a part of the trinity (idea - thought/planning - realisation) of creativity so to speak. When i'm thinking it's the One thinking.. and even when i'm lost in the dream, it's the one being lost in the dream.
Hi, I have a PhD in psychology, but even I can not understand any of this spiritual babble. What is the message here? Clarity and simplicity are all that is required - not (apparent) clever conceptual intellectualism.
What You are is beyond all boundaries (Western, non-Western, dual/non-dual). What difference does it make? Keep coming back to Now, because that is all there is. RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW. What are thoughts, concepts, beliefs, etc. in That which you are? In That, they are imaginary. What you are is NOW. Nothing can fool or trick That. All concepts are instantly seen through.
These words are written in LOVE (no 'person' can appreciate this). It is Love-Is-Ness - piercing Present-Clarity-Simplicity. You are That. The words are That. 'Content' suggests otherwise, but content is conceptual and the conceptual is not the real. All appears on Nothing, out of Nothing, and back to Nothing. Mysterious. Beyond Knowing. You Know This. Know IT Now. Only Now IS.
Peace and Love to All
