2012...?
What about 2012? Do you have any opinions about that?
Somewhere in december 2012 the Maya-calendar ends(something along those lines.) In a lot of New Age circles this ´end-date´ is being interpreted as the dawning of a better world. Perhaps through some sort of energy shift.
A few times I visited this ayahuasca-circle. The first time I went there I liked the setting very much. There was some New-Age stuff on the side, but it wasn´t necessary to go along with these stories, that were being told prior and after the ayahuasca ceremony. I was only there for the medicinal tea and the safe atmosphere in which to undergo it´s effects.
But when I went there a few weeks later the talking about 2012 became more prominent. There were plans to go to some remote place somewhere in Europe to start up a more permanent base that was free from ´the matrix.´ A sort of light center that would be able to resist the ever growing cosmic storm until December 2012.And when I went there a year later for the third time the plans were pretty concrete. At that point I knew I wouldn´t go there anymore. It didn´t feel right to me. Perhaps I would still be drinking ayahuasca if it wasn´t for that 2012 stuff. But from a clean-cut Non Dualist perspective this probably is a good development. :) This was all a few years ago.
I happened to read on a site from the/a Deeksha movement, which I´m not at all familiar with, that they take October 28, 2011 to be the real end-date of the Maya-calendar. So perhaps the party is on quite soon.
I´m not completely shutting down the option that a Great Shift will happen, but the option that nothing special will happen in the upcoming years is just as real, or even more real.
I agree overpopulation could be a serious problem. The fact that there is more and more turmoil probably is a direct result of the population growth.
But I doubt whether the netto-suffering per person is higher than in other times.I think that if the idea of a shift has an appeal to someone, then there is the tendency to look at the world in a certain way, searching for things that confirm the dawning Shift.
You used the words millennialistic and chilliastic, but I believe there is also a word for the tendency of people throughout history to always assume that they live in a special time that´s special and pivotal. Well, I don´t know the word, but someone made me aware of this phenomenon.
To me the idea of a Shift has less and less appeal. And I also wonder, what if there is a shift, then in 12000 years from now (or something) there will be again another New age dawning, so then again a Shift will come. That´s pretty deterministic. Then the message of the ´higher powers´ will be something like: ¨you people were happy and healthy, but too happy and healthy, therefore you will soon enter a Dark Age. Better prepare for the shift.¨ I mean, why should I prepare for something if it´s so deterministic.
At the same time I see this 2012 stuff more and more as an invitation to stand alone in the moment. I asked myself, what does it matter to me if a lot of people I like, take the 2012 stuff serious? I guess it´s the fear of not having things in common, and underneath that is the fear of truly standing alone, being your own guru. Sometimes I think, what would good old Krishnamurti make out of all of this? :)
I understand what you mean by mentioning the tendency of people in different ages to consider themselves like living in a special time, never seen before.I don`t know what it is called either, but it certainly belongs to a kind of collective egocentrism.
It is also my belief that the amount of suffering throughout the ages is constant and sometimes this makes me reflect on the evolution of consciousness, if there is something like that at all. Technically we are evolving in accelerating speed but consciously, if we do, there are still no concret practical effects that one can directly notice in everyday life.
This reflection leads me to also to your last paragraph about the people you like, who take the 2012 stuff seriously.
I understand how difficult it feels to finally be forced to stay alone since I`ve experienced the same thing for quite a while too.
Finally I think one has no choice, life pushes and forces the person to go his own way.
Or - as you more elegantly put it: One accept the invitation to stay alone. I think that, when this is done, it is in a mysterious way much easier to interact with others,no matter what their beliefs are.
Anyhow, these topics are interesting indipendently of our beliefs. They can always arouse chain reflections, at least in me.:)
I just wanted to note that many discussions, which center around the hope and/or prediction that an expansion of consciousness is imminent, are often referring to human consciousness. Though they don't specifically state that, it almost always is implied.
Which may be an anthropomorphic perspective, IMO.
As most things, that humans contemplate, are.
Great shifts are precipitated by many triggers.
The extinction of the dinosaurs had its triggers. Environmental/climate change and an asteroid being some of the more popular ones.
The human race is not exempt from similarly participating in the circle of life.
I intuitively perceive that it is not improbable for us to experience life the same way that the dinosaurs did.
Which may include near or total extinction.
One can't rule out that possibility ... but of course the term extinction is also open to interpretation.
Some manifestation of consciousness that was the dinosaurs, of course actually still exists -- they're now called birds and reptiles.
One could say that, like energy itself, no manifestation of consciousness is ever lost or extinguished, but is only transformed, or trans-mutated into another manifestation. A loose analogy would be that water doesn't really stop existing when it evaporates or freezes, it just becomes a different form.
Extrapolating from there, then any 'extinction' of the human manifestation, could actually be its transformation, transmutation, transfiguration, transcendence (pick your preferred word), into some trans-human manifestation. Just as now extinct pre-homosapien forms evolved into us, and whose DNA we still embody.
btw peter, just curious about your new avatar mandala-like thingy ... very mysterious!
It's a personalized version of the Vipassana wheel, or a spoked motorcycle wheel. The principle mode of getting from here to there for me, besides walking.
I still own a prototype, non-motorized version of that wonderful mode of transportation ... but alas don't ride it nearly as much as one probably should. I do however mostly walk from A to B these days. Being retired, I seldom have far to go, and have the luxury of lots of time to get there.
happy biking
Not sure what to make of the 2012 date, or if it has any significance whatsoever -- other than for the Mayans, of course. However, that a shift in consciousness, or a collective awakening is happening, and a new paradigm is being born, is IMHO unmistakably happening -- and has been for quite some time, perhaps even dawning in the sixties -- and is accelerating now with unstoppable momentum.
This, I believe, is the story of our collective destiny, foretold in the symbolism of the Christ and Buddha stories.
Witness now the literally thousands of awakenings, or realizations now happening on the planet, to people of all ages and cultures. A phenomenon that once only happened to the most rarefied Masters after years of devotion and meditation, now seems to be spontaneously prevalent, and possibly close to reaching some critical mass.
"The times they are a-changin" ... Does some specific date have any special importance? I somehow doubt it.
Yes, what about 2012? I`ve also heard the date 2025 somewhere...
Well, it is of course a belief about the future which nobody can know. But it is a very special belief which should perhaps be put among the s.c. millennialistic or chilliastic movements that had always arised about each millennium or hundred years.
We remember it happened in 2000 too.
As for 2012 it has indeed already passed the millennium so I don`t really know. Maybe psychologically it is the same phenomenon regardless the Maya-calendar, but in fact we are now also dealing with a lot of never before seen concret threats that we`ve never experienced before. So this might reinforce the convinction of the actuality of a possible shift.
I agree with the posts here below (I think Dana and Peter?) that this shifts are just routine in the Cosmos. And also that the shifts can be of any kind.
I wonder if we phsychologically might have also reached the point of a deep longing for this shift.
Of course we as humans have reached the highest degree of development and consciousness on this planet and we now feel entitled to believe that we are meant to be even more sophisticated. But how can we be sure of that?
The only thing we can be sure of is our extinction when our time has come.
Personally I don`t think we have so much time left to develope and sophisticate more.
Since I am of the opinion that the overpopulation is the biggest of all the problems on the Planet, maybe Gaia now try really to get rid of us, who knows?
For this subject there is a site which I often visit and which many might also know:

Here are also some very well done and funny video clips on this topic.
