Collaborative Spiritual Growth

Do not limit yourself to one particular study of one particular religion or tradition. Not a single one is the Only True religion, not a single one has the sole monopoly on God’s Realization, and not a single one can claim to be the one that All people Must follow. In order to gain a real understanding of the spiritual tradition one practices, or the religion one follows a person should study world religions, and world traditions. By limiting yourself to the study of one particular religion, not necessarily the practice, a person is blinding their self to the larger picture of how God is working across the globe in all people, and how ALL of the ancient religions were born in the midst of an isolated environment, which abhorred and even feared outside influences within their local religion.

There is Only One Thing to Do

Nick GancitanoNick Gancitano

Question: For more than 6 years now I have been 'doing' Self-inquiry to figure out: Who is the doer? When there is no I-thought, actions seem to happen on their own. No doer, like a sentence that has just been written down. Or as you state on your website, seeing/hearing/smelling is happening without an I doing it or thinking about the action. Only when there is a pre-thought such as 'I am now going to lift my right hand in the air', 'I' can see that that thought just happened out of nowhere. Not that the arm is moving or happening on its own accord. That is why the I is still in place, because it feels like I am the doer. So I am the doer and I am not the doer at the same time. This cannot be right and at the same time it feels like something is missing. Any suggestions to make the seeing clear? [Click 'Read More' for Nick's response]

From Paul Lowe's book, In Each Moment

Richard J MillerRichard J Miller

A chapter called "When the Spirit Takes Over".  I crossed paths with Paul Lowe more than 25 years ago, but never really got close to what he was doing.  Lately I have been reading his books from the 90's, and I find them quite helpful and clear.  This reading he suggests listening to with closed eyes (or eyes at "half mast"), so I will read it for you.  www.PaulLowe.org

Here is some Paul Lowe from the same book that sets it very simply.

"There is a state of being that has been described as "the peace that passeth all understanding," the Tao, or the Hidden Harmony. Closer to our own experience we tend to describe it as happiness, spirit, freedom, source, or inner peace.  Yet no word or phrase can really express the nature of that state.

This indescribable state exists equally in everyone.  It has been covered up by what we have been told, what is, and is not possible. From this conditioning, we have created patterns of behavior that have literally buried our essence, our joy and our spirit.

We have assumed that there is something wrong with us and we have spent our lives attempting to put it right.  In fact, there is nothing wrong; all we need do is become aware, in each moment, of the behavioral patterns with which we have covered our essential self.  When we are present to each moment we are on the path to "the indescribable," to freedom.

Much of the time we feel uncomfortable and we try to escape from this experience.  We escape into our addictions, into alcohol, smoking, eating, anger, relationship conflicts, or complaining.  Working on ourselves can also be like a drug; it is what we do instead of being exactly who we are, feeling exactly what we feel.  We can encourage ourselves to be who we truly are, to feel whatever we are feeling.  There is no need to understand, nor to work on ourselves.  All that is needed is simply to be ourselves.

When we do this, layers that cover what is essential in us then drop away on their own.  Our system is self-healing if we allow it to be.

We have forgotten, or lost touch with knowing, that we are spirit contained in a body, mind, and emotions - - and not a body that possibly contains the essence of pure spirit.  This is the realization that awaits us as we bring ourselves present to each moment. Everyone is looking for the way home.  It is closer than we ever imagined.

A life of freedom begins when we realize deep within ourselves that we are whole and complete just as we are. There is nothing to do, to find, to see, to understand, to work on.  There is no right way to be.

Most people live on a surface level.  When you live this way it is like being on top of a rough ocean, getting tossed and churned around with the waves of life.  Peace and fulfillment come from living in the depths of ourselves, sensitively, with awareness, in each moment."

Living in Meditation

Leading a happy, satisfied life with no inner conflicts is a possibility I am here to talk about. This is essentially based upon what I learnt by studying the works of Swami Suddhananda ji of Samvit sagar Trust.

External circumstances can never be made perfectly conflictless. If possible we might avoid conflict. But externally there is no possibility of conflictless living. But internally its possible to lead a conflictless life. A life of inner harmony if we may like to term it that way.Everyone, irrespective of their upbringing, irrespective of their faith and beliefs, wants to lead a happy life. A life where there is no sense of emptiness within. Externally it may never be possible. If my boss says something wrong and i am left with no option but to contradict him, it can create conflict. Externally we can try but its not possible to lead a totally conflictless life. But inner harmony or calmness is possible.

How to lead such a life?
Long before we understand how we can lead a conflictless life , we need understand how we create inner conflicts in life. We need to know how to handle our minds / thoughts. If I may be allowed to use an example, if I am given a machine ... say , a car, I do not know how to drive the car and therefore I end up in an accident. The intention of the person who gave me the gift is not to murder me. A car is a useful tool, a machine that is given to me. I can learn to drive and drive comfortably to my destination or I can misuse it and end up accidents and troubles.
